About Nick - A Journey with Dogs
About Nick Jones: Dog Behaviourist, Expert Witness and Media Contributor
Hello, I’m Nick Jones. I’m a full-time, independent dog behaviourist with over 25 years of hands-on experience working with dogs and their owners across the UK.
Since founding Alpha Dog Behaviour Ltd, I’ve completed well over two and a half thousand dog behaviour consultations, covering almost every aspect of dog behaviour imaginable. From aggression and predatory chasing to separation anxiety, barking, recall problems and helping families safely integrate dogs with children and newborn babies, I’ve worked through it all with a calm and practical approach.
Today, I’m just as passionate about helping people build positive and lasting relationships with their dogs as I was when I first started the business.
My Qualifications and Professional Memberships
I hold a Master’s Degree in Dog Behaviour from Middlesex University, London (Professional Practice in Canine Behaviour and Psychology).
I am a full member of the Canine and Feline Behaviour Association (CFBA), the UK’s leading professional body for dog behaviour practitioners. Achieving full membership required meeting strict criteria, which means you can be confident in the professional standards I follow.
I also hold full public liability and professional indemnity insurance, and I stay up to date with the latest developments in dog behaviour science, training methods and dog law by attending ongoing professional development courses.
My Role as Petplan’s Pet Behaviourist
In 2018, I was appointed as the Pet Behaviourist for Petplan UK, the UK’s largest and most trusted pet insurer. This role has involved delivering live Q&A clinics on Facebook and creating a series of educational dog behaviour and training videos for Petplan’s audience, as well as ongoing content creation that is made together.
As a full CFBA member, I am also approved to work with pet insurance companies. Depending on your policy, you may be able to reclaim my behaviour consultation fees through your insurer.
My Approach to Dog Behaviour Work
Every dog is unique, and every case requires a tailored approach. I am proud to be fully independent, running my own business without the restrictions of a franchise or outside agency. This freedom allows me to take a flexible, common-sense approach with each case, rather than following a formulaic script.
Dog owners often tell me they’ve spent hours searching for answers online without success. That’s because general advice rarely solves complex behaviour issues. Real solutions come from a proper understanding of the dog, the environment, the people involved, and the specific problem at hand.
My methods focus on calm, effective and practical guidance that owners can easily follow. I help you make changes without shouting, frustration or heavy-handed techniques.
Restoring harmony to homes where dog behaviour has become a serious stress point is one of the most rewarding parts of my work. Yes, things really can get better, and yes, I can help.
A Little More About Me
My passion for dogs started in childhood, growing up in Bristol. That love deepened when I began working with my Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizsla, Amber. Winning a national working test with her at just nine months old planted the seed for a career in dog training and behaviour.
I launched Alpha Dog Behaviour Ltd when our daughter Katie was still a baby and my partner Sara was working full time in Birmingham. Today, Sara helps me run the business smoothly, leaving me free to focus on my clients and their dogs.
We now live in Bewdley, Worcestershire, alongside Ruby, our miniature Goldendoodle, and Doris the cat, who quietly rules the house. More dogs may come down the line, but for now, a single dog allows us to stay flexible as the business remains a busy aspect of our lives.
My Geographical Coverage
Living in Bewdley places me centrally within the UK. In the past, I travelled the length and breadth of the country, as well as taking on the occasional international case.
While I still enjoy getting out and about, I now prefer to limit most of my work to within one or two hours’ drive from home. For cases further afield, I often use my campervan, allowing me to stay locally and conduct back-to-back visits over two consecutive days. This setup works well for both me and my clients, offering flexibility without compromising on service quality.
Expert Witness Work
Alongside my behaviour consultations, I also work as a Dog Expert Witness, specialising in dangerous dog behaviour assessments, breed type identification, assessments for adoption and fostering agencies and court appearances throughout the UK. I have a strong track record of helping to save dogs from destruction and providing professional, balanced reports to support owners and legal professionals. If you are facing a legal issue involving your dog, you can find more details about my expert witness services.
