Insurance Claims for Dog Behaviour Problems

If your dog is insured, you may be able to claim back the cost of my dog behaviour consultations through your pet insurance policy. Many leading UK pet insurance providers offer cover for canine behavioural therapy, helping to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses when working with a professional dog behaviourist such as myself.

Are Dog Behaviourist Fees Covered by Pet Insurance?

In many cases, yes. Pet insurance policies that include cover for dog behaviour problems will often pay for behaviour consultations carried out by a qualified and approved dog behaviourist.

Typically, your insurer will cover the full cost of my professional behaviourist fees, less any policy excess, which averages at only £100.00. Policies do vary. It is always best to contact your pet insurance provider before booking a consultation to check:

  • Whether your policy includes cover for behavioural therapy

  • What level of cover is provided

  • Whether any exclusions apply

  • The process for submitting a claim

  • Your excess amount

Most insurers will also require a vet referral from your veterinary surgeon before they will approve the claim.

Why Choose a Registered and Qualified Dog Behaviourist?

Being a full member of the Canine and Feline Behaviour Association (CFBA) allows me to work with pet insurance companies that cover behavioural problems in dogs.

The CFBA is recognised by major UK pet insurance providers as a mark of professional quality and expertise in the field of dog behaviour. My membership confirms that I meet the standards required by insurers, giving you peace of mind that your claim is eligible for approval.

How to Make a Claim for Dog Behaviour Consultations

The claims process is straightforward:

  1. Contact Your Insurance Provider
Before booking a consultation, contact your insurer to confirm cover for dog behaviour therapy.

  2. Obtain a Vet Referral
Your insurance company will require a referral from your veterinary practice. You can download a convenient vet referral form to give to your vet. Keep hold of the completed form, as it will need to accompany your claim paperwork after our consultation.

  3. Contact me providing your details.
I will be able to guide you on how to claim and offer guidance re paperwork completion.

  4. Book Your Behaviour Consultation
Once your referral is in place, book your session with me.

  5. Receive Written Behaviour Report
Following our session, I will provide a written report for both you and your vet (if your vet wishes to stay informed).

  6. Submit Your Claim
I will help you complete your insurance paperwork correctly during our visit, including stamping the forms where needed.

Important Notes About Behavioural Cover

Every pet insurance company defines “behavioural problems” differently. Cover typically applies to issues that fall under recognised canine behaviour disorders, not general dog training. It is always advisable to clarify with your insurer whether your dog’s issue qualifies under their terms for behavioural therapy before booking any sessions.
Claims for dog behaviour normally fall under veterinary fees, not complimentary treatment, which means you have far more cover to draw from financially.
